1. How does CAN/OBD2 streaming work?

4.1 Streaming Raw CAN Data
Connect the CLX000 to the car and stream raw CAN data in real time over USB, then open Wireshark with CANvas to see the CAN frames displayed as raw input, including timestamp, CAN ID and data bytes.

4.2 Decoding OBD2 data
If the CLX000 is set to request the OBD2 PID, the car’s OBD2 PID response (usually CAN ID 7E8) can be viewed in the raw data stream. By right-clicking and selecting ‘Decode As / OBD-II’, the raw OBD2 data can be converted into an easily understandable format, such as a real-time display of the vehicle’s speed.

5.1 Loading CAN DBC Files
The Wireshark plugin allows you to convert raw CAN data in real time using your own DBC files (including support for J1939 DBC files). This is a powerful feature as this will enable you to analyze/plot physical values ​​on your car, truck, tractor or machine in real time. 5.2 Enable the “CAN live” trace view
For reverse engineering and car hacking, the Wireshark plugin enables the powerful “CAN Live” trace view. This will display a row for each CAN ID and colorize the data bytes for each ID in real time. It provides an excellent tool for connecting CAN IDs to physical events and identifying bit or byte locations of proprietary CAN bus signals. 5.3 Customizing Columns
We can easily adjust the column structure of Wireshark. To remove a column, just right-click and click “Remove Columns”. To add a data field as a column, right-click it in the details pane and select “Apply as Column”. 5.4 Plotting Data

5.5 Data Coloring

By right-clicking on a field in the middle part of the window, you can color all occurrences red where a specific CAN message contains a specific range of data bytes. As shown in the figure below, in the OBD2 data, when the “Converted value” exceeds 50 km/h, the vehicle speed can be colored yellow, and when it exceeds 60 km/h, it can be colored red.

5.6 Adding filters

Filters allow us to better control the data flow. The fastest way to add a filter is to right-click on a data field in the details pane and select “Apply as Filter”. This will update the text field in the top left and we can then edit the details to suit our needs. Let’s say we are streaming OBD2 “requests” (ID 7DF) and “responses” (ID 7E8) and only want to see the responses? Simply write “can.id == 0x000007e8” in the filter. It will turn green to show that it is valid and we can click enter, use the “Expression…” button and of course build more advanced filters using various relational operators.

5.7 Exporting Data in Custom Formats
